New Rules for Other Service Providers

The government last week announced simplified guidelines for the BPO industry and IT-enabled services. The registration requirement for other service providers (OSPs) has been done away with altogether. The BPO industry engaged in data-related work is now out of the ambit of OSP regulations. The Ministry of Communications announced the simplified guidelines for business process outsourcing (BPO) and IT-enabled services (ITES) players to reduce the compliance burden for the industry. OSPs are entities providing applications, IT-enabled or any kind of outsourcing services using telecom resources. The term refers to BPOs, KPOs, ITES, call centres, among others. The new rules will create a friendly-regime for work from home and work from anywhere, while removing several reporting and other obligations for such companies. It is aimed at providing a strong impetus to the industry and positioning India as one of the most competitive IT jurisdictions in the world.

Principle number 1: Do extensive research. I contacted several suppliers to find out answers to my questions and to request references. After reviewing their references, I narrowed the list to a supplier that I thought could produce a product in the time, price, quantity, and quality that were required. I sent them materials, patterns, and a sample upper for them to make samples and price the product.
Now, it was time to visit the supplier.

Principle number 2: Visit suppliers to kick the tires. It is always important to visit your suppliers. Usually, you will know right away when you walk into a factory whether this is a company you want to do business with.

Principle number 3: Never order production without a trial run. Give a trial order. Check the quality and if everything is to your specification then proceed to have a partnership for outsourcing.

Principle number 4: Decide whether to take a leap of faith if everything is right.

Principle number 5: Visit your supplier on a regular basis and build a trusting relationship.  You need to visit your suppliers on a regular basis to make sure the quality is correct, the production is on schedule and the factory is adhering to human rights standards. Communication is as important as teamwork. Transparency is something that you might need to look into since partnerships work best with it. You have to create a room for everyone to be able to express and be heard. Listen to good and bad news, brainstorm new business plans and approaches and be objective.
